Summer in a family childcare home brings sunshine, longer days—and a lot of little energy in a small space! Whether you're caring for mixed age groups or juggling naptimes and lunch prep, summertime can feel a bit overwhelming.

At Wild About Learning, we know what it's like to be in the thick of it. That’s why we’re sharing some of our favorite summer survival tips just for family childcare providers—to help you make the most of the season while keeping things simple and joyful.

1. Keep Water Play Easy and Safe

You don’t need a big yard or fancy supplies. Try:

  • Buckets with measuring cups

  • A shallow bin with toy animals and soap bubbles

  • Sponges, paintbrushes, and water “painting” on the sidewalk

Water play keeps kids cool and entertained—and it gives you a break from high-energy chaos.

2. Take the Learning Outdoors

Even a small patio or porch can become a magical learning space. Try:

  • Snack time picnics

  • Reading under a tree or umbrella

  • Nature walks around the block (clipboards and crayons optional!)

Fresh air helps regulate behavior and supports healthy development.

3. Embrace Mixed-Age Learning

One of the gifts of family childcare is that younger and older kids can learn together. Encourage:

  • Buddy crafts (older kids help the little ones)

  • Group storytelling or music circles

  • Open-ended activities with different levels of challenge

You don’t need separate plans for every age—just flexible ideas that meet kids where they are.

4. Less Structure, More Play

Summer is the perfect time to relax your schedule a bit and let kids lead the way. Focus on:

  • Free play

  • Simple crafts with household items

  • Imaginative play indoors and out

Let go of perfection and enjoy the creativity that flows when you follow their lead.

5. Take a Little Time for YOU

Caring for children all day is hard work. Even just 20 minutes a week to recharge or learn something new can make a big difference.

At Wild About Learning, we offer:

  • On-demand training courses you can do during naptime or after hours

  • Live Zoom workshops to connect with other providers

  • A supportive online community just for early educators like you
